Manuel de los Santos Pastor was born in Rota in Cadiz in 1939. The son of Agujetas el Viejo, Manuel forged himself as a singer. In the sixties he moved to Madrid to record his first album, accompanied by the guitar of Manolo Sanlúcar. Thanks to this he worked in many ‘tablao’ -premises where flamenco is performed- in the capital, until in 1977 he won Jerez de la Frontera’s Professorship of the Study of Flamenco Award. Afterwards he went to the United States, at which point he was already consolidated as an essential figure of this genre. He excelled in his performance of ‘seguiriyas’ and ‘soleares’, although his great depth can be seen in his ‘tonás’, as he demonstrated in the film Flamenco by Carlos Saura. In 2000 the French filmmaker Dominique Abel presented the documentary Agujetas cantaor, where the artist explained his polemic vision of flamenco.
